Why are we so infatuated with Autumn? Perhaps it is because Autumn gives us a sense of warmth and marks the beginning of festivities. Autumn is the season that kisses Summer into a deep slumber and anticipates the cool embrace of Winter. Known for being a well loved season, the distinct characteristics of Autumn can often be seen in various lighting design:
1) Being One With Nature
Bare branches, and graceful falling leaves are quintessential of Autumn, and gives a sense of tranquility. The Aldo (Eurofase), Tree Branch (Elk Lighting), and Organique (Kichler) represent nature during this transitional phase.
The Aldo highlights the beauty of barren branches as the sculpture suspends within an open LED frame. The Tree Branch lamp has a base resembling the roots of a tree, and the Organique is structured like a cozy bird’s nest made from twigs.
2) Warm Tones
Dusty cedar, hickory, tan, and other neutrals are often associated with Autumn, as well as warm metals such as copper, bronze, rust, and antique finishing.
These warm tones can be seen in a variety of fixtures and portables, such as the the Kettle (Nuvo), Brookfield (Satco), Over-the-head reading lamp (Dainolite), and the Legno Rustico (Artcraft).
The Kettle pendant is designed with a lighter weathered brass finish on the inner shade allowing the brass tones to illuminate when the pendant is lit. The Brookfield and the Over-the-head reading lamp use different bronze finishes: the Brookfield is finished in aged bronze with gold accents, while the Over-the-head reading lamp is finished in oil brushed bronze. The Legno Rustico pairs dark pine with a Brunito bronze finish.
3) Fabrics
Thick fabrics, rich tones, and texture mark the beginning of “sweater weather” in Autumn. The Longport (Elk Lighting), Travertine (Uttermost), and Travelers Mirror (Elk Lighting) are reminiscent of “sweater weather” qualities.
The Longport combines the smoothness of a glass base with a textured natural linen shade. The Travertine has a hand carved Travertine stone base with a thick linen fabric shade. The Travelers Mirror has faux leather trimming in a deep hickory colour, and accented with gold studs.
4)Mix of Wood and Metal
The marriage of wood and metal symbolizes the Autumn activities that often take part outside the city limits. The wagon that carries the pumpkins from the pumpkin patch, or the barn that provides a dwelling space to escape the cold use a combination of wood and metal. The Baron (Quoizel), 432 Series (Ulextra), and Cesto (Eurofase) demonstrates the rustic characteristic of mixing wood and metal.
The Baron is made of medium dark stained wood and a Marcado black finish. The 432 Series combines walnut stained wood and a dark metal finish, while the Cesto has a weathered wood appearance and iron accents that mimic the look of vintage crates.
5) Reflection
The Autumn season also signifies a time of reflection, which is represented by the Cresfield (Dainolite), and Hexagonal Mirrors (Elk Lighting).
The Cresfield has crystal orbs that reflect light, while the set of hexagonal mirrors offer a reflective surface, with metallic gold framing resembling honeycomb jewels.
Though Autumn has a brief presence, you can find its qualities in a variety of fixtures and portables that will last beyond a season. Check out our Kelowna and Winnipeg showroom for more selections and the latest design in lighting.
